The questions below come up repeatedly from students, parents and teachers. The answers are as direct as the evidence allows, including where the honest answer is that we do not yet know.
Does using AI actually improve results?
It depends entirely on how it is used, and that is not a hedge. AI used for immediate feedback on attempted work, for generating retrieval practice, and for re-explaining material at the right level maps directly onto techniques with strong evidence behind them. AI used to produce answers you then read is closer to rereading, which has decades of evidence showing it does very little. Same tool, opposite outcomes.
How accurate are AI answers?
Good on mainstream, well-documented material; unreliable on arithmetic, multi-step derivations, citations, statistics, recent events and specialist topics. The critical point is that accuracy and confidence are unrelated — wrong answers arrive in the same authoritative tone as correct ones. Verify anything you will be graded on against your course material.
Is using AI cheating?
Using it to understand is not. Submitting its output as your own work is. The practical test is whether you could defend every part of a submission under questioning without the tool. Beyond that, your institution's policy governs, and policies differ by course — read them rather than assuming.
Will AI make students worse at thinking?
There is a real risk and it is not evenly distributed. Cognitive offloading is well documented: when a tool reliably performs a task, the underlying skill weakens. Students who use AI to skip the difficult part of learning are likely to end up less capable, because the difficult part is where the capability is built.
But that is a description of misuse, not of the technology. Calculators did not destroy mathematical ability in students who still learned the reasoning; they did hollow out arithmetic fluency where practice stopped. The determining factor is whether the effortful cognitive work is still happening somewhere. It is worth being honest that the long-term data on this is thin — the tools are too new for good longitudinal studies.
Should young children use AI tools?
With supervision, narrower scope, and later than most platforms' marketing implies. Younger learners are less able to detect confident errors, more likely to accept generated text as authoritative, and still building the foundational skills that AI can most easily short-circuit. Most services set a minimum age; LearnVerse AI's terms specify ours, and younger users should be under adult supervision with clear rules about what the tool is for.
Will AI replace teachers?
No, and the framing misunderstands the job. Teaching is diagnosis, motivation, pastoral judgement, curriculum design, classroom management and knowing that a particular student is struggling for reasons that have nothing to do with the subject. AI is good at explanation and practice generation, which are components of teaching, not the whole of it. The realistic effect is that some of the repetitive load — generating differentiated practice, first-pass feedback — becomes cheaper, and the human time freed goes to the parts only humans do.
What about privacy?
Reasonable question and worth asking of any service. Look for a specific privacy policy that states what is collected, how long it is retained and whether it is used for model training; the ability to delete your data; and clear boundaries on sharing. Regardless of the provider, keep identification numbers, financial details, medical information and other people's personal data out of prompts and uploads.
Is AI biased?
Yes, in the sense that it reflects the text it learned from — including whose perspectives dominate, whose scholarship is cited and which defaults are treated as neutral. On contested historical, political or cultural questions, treat output as one framing rather than a settled account, and notice what is missing rather than only evaluating what is present.
How should parents supervise AI use?
- Ask to see the work, not the output. 'Explain this to me' reveals more than any monitoring software.
- Agree explicitly on what the tool is for in your household — understanding and practice, not producing submissions.
- Keep study devices in shared spaces for younger learners.
- Read the course policies together at the start of a term so the rules are known before the pressure arrives.
- Treat a sudden jump in written quality alongside no change in verbal understanding as a conversation, not an accusation.
How can teachers respond constructively?
Assessment design does more than detection. In-class writing, oral defence, process artefacts such as drafts and notes, and questions grounded in specific classroom discussion are all difficult to outsource. Detection tools, by contrast, have meaningful false-positive rates and should never be the sole basis of an accusation. Many teachers are also finding the tools genuinely useful on their own side of the desk — differentiated practice sets and first-pass feedback take a fraction of the time they used to.
What is the single most important habit?
Attempt first, then ask. Almost every good use of AI in education follows from that ordering, and almost every bad one from reversing it.
