Effective Study Techniques for Exams: What the Evidence Actually Supports
Spaced repetition, retrieval practice, interleaving and elaboration — the four techniques with the strongest evidence behind them, and how to run each one this week.
Almost every student has been told to 'study harder' and almost none have been told how. The gap is unfortunate, because the research literature on learning is unusually clear. A small number of techniques produce large, repeatable gains across subjects, ages and countries. A larger number of popular techniques produce almost nothing while feeling extremely productive. This article covers the four that work, why they work, and exactly how to run them.
1. Retrieval practice: test yourself before you feel ready
Retrieval practice means attempting to recall information from memory rather than reviewing it. Close the notes, write down everything you know about photosynthesis, then check. The discomfort is the mechanism, not a side effect: each successful retrieval makes the next one easier and more durable, and each failed retrieval marks precisely the gap you need to close.
Compare that to rereading. Rereading produces a strong feeling of familiarity, and familiarity is systematically mistaken for knowledge. This is why students walk out of exams genuinely surprised at how badly they did — they had read the material so many times it felt known.
How to run it
- Brain dump: after any study block, spend five minutes writing everything you can recall on a blank page. No looking.
- Question yourself in full sentences — 'explain why the reaction is exothermic' beats 'exothermic?'
- Grade honestly. A half-remembered answer is a wrong answer for revision purposes.
- Keep a running 'missed' list. That list, not the textbook, is your revision schedule.
2. Spaced repetition: revisit at increasing intervals
Memory decays predictably. Reviewing material just as it starts to fade produces far stronger retention than reviewing it while it is still fresh. Practically: study something today, review tomorrow, then in three days, then in a week, then in three weeks. Each successful review buys a longer interval.
The reason cramming feels effective is that it works — for about seventy-two hours. If your exam is tomorrow, cram; it is a legitimate emergency technique. If your exam is in six weeks, the same total hours spread across those weeks will produce roughly double the retention, and you will still have the knowledge for the next course that builds on it.
Flashcards are the classic implementation because the interval logic can be automated per card. Cards you find easy fall to the back of the queue; cards you keep failing come back tomorrow. What matters is that the schedule is driven by your performance, not by your mood.
3. Interleaving: mix problem types deliberately
Blocked practice means doing twenty quadratic equations in a row. Interleaved practice means mixing quadratics with simultaneous equations and inequalities in unpredictable order. Blocked practice produces better performance during the session and worse performance on the test. Interleaved practice feels harder, produces more errors while you are practising, and consistently outperforms it on delayed assessments.
The reason is that a real exam never tells you which method to use. Blocked practice trains execution once the method is known; interleaving trains the harder and more valuable skill of recognising which problem you are looking at. If you have ever known how to do every technique in a syllabus and still frozen on a paper, this is the missing piece.
Practical version: never do a problem set in the order the book presents it. Shuffle it. Mix in questions from two chapters ago. Accept that your accuracy during practice will drop and that this is the point.
4. Elaboration: explain it to someone who does not know it
Elaboration means connecting new material to what you already know and to itself — asking why and how rather than what. The most reliable version is teaching. Explaining a concept out loud, without notes, to a real or imagined beginner exposes every gap instantly, because you cannot bluff your way through a causal chain you do not actually have.
The classic protocol: pick a topic, explain it in plain language as if to a twelve-year-old, notice exactly where you stall or reach for jargon, go back to the source for that specific gap, then explain again. Two or three passes will take a topic from 'I have read this' to 'I own this'.
Techniques that feel productive and are not
- Highlighting: almost no measurable effect on retention. It marks text as important without processing it.
- Rereading: high familiarity, low recall. The single most common study method and among the weakest.
- Copying notes neatly: transcription, not learning. Rewriting in condensed, restructured form is different and does help.
- Passive video watching: comprehension without retrieval. Fine for first exposure, useless as revision.
- 'Learning styles' matching: no credible evidence that tailoring material to visual/auditory preferences improves outcomes.
Building a four-week exam plan
A structure that works for most students, adjustable to the size of the syllabus:
- Week 1 — Map and first pass. List every topic on the syllabus and rate your confidence 1–5. Cover the low-confidence topics first, with active notes and a brain dump after each.
- Week 2 — Question generation. Convert notes into questions and flashcards. Begin daily short retrieval sessions on everything covered so far.
- Week 3 — Interleaved problem work. Mixed sets across topics, timed. Track error types, not just scores.
- Week 4 — Full papers under exam conditions, followed by targeted repair of whatever the papers exposed. Reduce new content to near zero.
Two rules make the difference. First, revision time is allocated by weakness, not by preference — most students over-revise their strongest topic because it feels good. Second, every session ends with a written recall of what it covered, which doubles as the input to the next spaced review.
Sessions, breaks and the honest limits
Focused work in blocks of 25 to 50 minutes with short breaks suits most people; the exact number matters far less than removing the phone from the room. Sleep is not optional revision time — memory consolidation happens overnight, and a night lost to cramming typically costs more than the extra hours gained.
None of these techniques are pleasant in the moment. That is the tell. Learning that feels effortless is usually not happening, and learning that feels difficult usually is.
